Nearly everyone I talk to wants to know what the best ab workout is for losing fat off their belly. It’s amazing. I really have no idea where the notion comes from that sit ups and crunches burn stomach fat.

Seriously. I have no idea, because it doesn’t matter how many situps and crunches you do, it won’t burn fat off your stomach.

It’s not that you should avoid your ab workout altogether, because it does serve a purpose. But before you hop on the floor to pound out 100’s of sit ups a day for weeks or months on end, get the following in check first:

1) Get Your Workouts in: It doesn’t matter if you do bodyweight training, full body training, body part training, training with weights. Just get your ass out the house and do something in this regard. Muscle is where Fat’s burned. You gotta have it whether your a man or a woman. If you’re a woman and are afraid of getting bulky, suck it up. It’s impossible if you have #2-#3 in your program.

2) Eat clean, Eat A lot, and Eat Often: Breakfast, you gotta have it. No ifs, ands, or butts about it. 4 Meals per day minimum. Get 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight. Split the remaining calories between carbs & fat.

3) Run, Bike, Paddle: Doesn’t matter what you do, just get in 40 minutes of cardio in per week. You can do 10 minutes a day or two 20 minutesessions per week. Just do it.

Now, back to the ab workouts. Here are the guidelines to follow when putting together your program:

1) Treat your abs like any other muscle, because they’re exactly the same. Don’t train them every day. They need rest, too.

2) Ditch high reps. Anything over 15 reps per set, throw it out the window. The only thing higher reps will do is make you really good at doing a crapload of whatever ab exercise it is you’re doing.

3) Low Reps, Heavy Weight. You don’t have to be fancy. A sack of potatoes held to your chest while doing crunches will suffice. Keep the reps between 6-12. Rest 45-60 seconds between sets.

4) Use supersets, triple sets, & circuits for your ab workouts. You’ll save time, and automatically incorporate “Active Rest” between exercises. So, pick 2-3 exercises, set your reps & get after it. 4-6 sets per workout is plenty.
