The Secret to Losing Fat

I just got back from doing some cardio up at the gym about 20 minutes ago… One thing I LOVE about the “long-slow” cardio is that it sort of takes me away from everything and allows me to do some thinking..

Some of you may not know this, but I’m a college football fanatic. Doesn’t matter who’s playing, I’ll watch. Just love it.

So, I’ve got a little story for you that has EVERYTHING to do with Losing-Fat, and something you can use RIGHT now to achieve your goals, so stay with me (I’ll try to keep it short)…

Onward…

5 Years ago Charlie Weis Took over the football program at Notre Dame - a high powered program.

3 years ago Nick Saban took over the football program at the University of Alabama - another school that has a history of dominance.

Both Notre Dame & Alabama have a long history of success, but have sputtered miserably in the past decade.

And both Coaches have had a tremendous amount of success at their previous coaching jobs, so they were both seen by their respective fan base & their schools as the Man to bring the program back to dominance.

Both had 1 Goal:

Win the College Football National Championship.

Charlie Weis went in at Notre Dame with Big Dreams, and often talked about how good “next year” is going to be, how they were improving, and LOVED talking about how he was going to turn his program around and bring a National Championship back to his school.

Charlie focused on the end goal, win a National Championship.

He was their “Savior”, and he knew it.

Nick Saban went in at Alabama, despised talking about lofty goals, didn’t want to talk about “Next Year”, and would frown and cuss anytime someone brought up this “National Title” talk.

He was their “Savior”, and he didn’t care.

In 5 years, Charlie Weis achieved one of the worst coaching records in Notre Dame’s history. And despite striving for the ultimate end goal, he failed miserably - he was fired just a few weeks ago.

In 3 years, Nick Saban took over a struggling program, had 2 undefeated seasons, and won the National Championship for Alabama in Year 3, just one week ago.

Here’s Nick Saban after the National championship game last week:

“We had a goal at the beginning of the year, and to achieve that goal we just needed to focus on the process on how to achieve that goal.”

Nick Saban focused on his team passing, tackling, running, and catching better than the opponent.

One coach focused on the end goal… and failed.

The other coach focused on the Process to achieve the end goal… and not only achieved it, but achieved it with unrelenting dominance.

WHAT THIS HAS TO DO WITH LOSING-FAT

The road to success that you will encounter this year in losing-fat will ultimately come down to the fact that you had a goal and a clear and concise strategy on how to achieve that goal.

Nick Saban’s focus on running, tackling, and passing better than his opponent to reach his end goal is VERY Similar to us having to focus on

-nutrition,

- working out, and

-doing cardio to reach our end goal of losing-fat

So I ask you….

Are you focusing on the”processes” to burn fat? And if so what are you doing to focus on it?

    Hi there

Wow all the information you share is taken in and worked with. I have lost a couple of Kg 6 in total. But the old bulge is still there but smaller.

  4. Per Says:

I agree with the process thing, it’s getting the “job done” everyday regarding diet, lifestyle and exercise that ultimately leads to the goal. To know where to get is important, sure, but it’s staying on the waggon that will bring results.

    Super post Todd!

Although I\’m not currently trying to lose body fat myself. I\’m a Personal Trainer and I’m constantly striving to learn and get better at my profession – by reading info such as your recent fat loss post.

Staying on track! Wow with so many things going on, keeping the focus to stay on track is difficult for this working Mom. Yes I too would like to know more.

  7. Dave Says:

The process is the hardest & easiest thing anyone can do!! If you can be totally
committed to eating properly and doing the proper type of strength training, i.e., slow, hard (intense) and brief, the the goal will be achieved by all. I reiterate, it sounds easy but it is extremely hard to alter the process in order to reach the goal!! The workout is just a catalyst - so it has to be done properly; the recuperation and fuel (food) are what brings about the results. When the goal(s) are achieved, the difficulty of the process is considerably lessened - you finally start to look forward to the discomfort and the feeling of hunger again.

  8. LeAnn Says:

Thanks Todd. More information on the process would be great!

exercises to do please on pictures.

  11. Margo Says:

Instead of looking at how many pounds and inches you want to lose by a certain date, it would be much better to focus on what processes you are going to use daily to acheive the weight loss. It would be a great thing to have a process to use even after the weight loss.

  12. Mary Says:

I would be interested in this topic of focusing on the process. I definitely over focus on the goal and get discouraged. Thanks!

  15. Thomas Says:

My goal is clear 1} to loose fat and excess weight 2) get my six abs pack back and 3) strengthen my Quads, and foot flexors to correct my faulty gait post spinal fusion operation 2 yrs ago now for lumbar stenosis at age of 72..Least important is 2 .The processes reqd are identified as diet, lifestyle changes and exercise They are difficult to combine and implement Strong motivation and commitment are great help
Are there any other strategies—ringing the changes on diet on appropriate lifestyle and exercise routines( different combinaions) ?? ,

  16. Mr Connie McCarthy Says:

    Hi Todd

While I do a large amount of cardio exercise and moderate weight training, I still find it difficult to beat the urge for sugar. When I go out, I don’t drink alcohol (personal choice) but I drink half a gallon of cola!! After a work out, I feel more like consuming a chocolate bar rather than something savoury with protein. I’m worried Todd that, despite the regular intensive exercise, this sugar dependency will destroy all the good work I’ve done in the last 5 years or so.

  17. mike Says:

    Tell us Todd!

I have always struggled with the long slow process, and I can’t get the weight off quick enough which usually makes me give up!
